About the painting

From his earlier Dutch period, the Hammer Museum also holds Garden of the Rectory at Nuenen. This painting depicts the view from the parsonage where Van Gogh lived with his parents. It's among his "Dutch pictures," characterized by darker tones and flatter impasto than his later French works. The scene presents a somewhat bleak and isolated landscape, yet there's a subtle hint of the expressive use of light that would later define his style, particularly in the iodine yellow light in the sky. This painting is crucial for understanding the stylistic foundations upon which his later, more exuberant works would be built.
